Question 1

How do I convert a photo to a cross stitch pattern?

Accepted Answer

Upload your image in the Photo2Stitch editor, pick how many DMC colors you want (2 to 50), and we'll convert your photo to a cross stitch pattern in seconds. You get a free preview before checkout. After purchase you can edit individual stitches and colors on the digital canvas.

Question 2

Can I turn any picture into a cross stitch pattern?

Accepted Answer

Almost any picture works. Our converter handles JPG, PNG, and WebP up to 4000×4000 pixels. Clearer photos with distinct subjects (portraits, pets, simple landscapes) turn into the cleanest patterns. Busy photos still convert — our confetti-reduction algorithm groups colors into stitchable blocks.

Question 3

Is Photo2Stitch a free cross stitch picture converter?

Accepted Answer

Previewing your converted pattern is always free, upload a photo and see the pattern before paying anything. You only pay when you're ready to unlock the full editable digital canvas, bill of materials, and downloadable thread list.

Question 4

Is there a free program for turning pictures into cross stitch patterns?

Accepted Answer

Photo2Stitch lets you upload a photo, image, or picture and preview the converted cross stitch pattern for free, as many times as you like. You can change the crop, color count, and contrast between previews without paying. The free preview shows the full pattern so you can decide whether it works before unlocking the editable digital canvas.

Question 5

What makes a good photo to cross stitch pattern?

Accepted Answer

High-contrast photos with clear subjects translate best. Portraits, pet photos, and simple landscapes work beautifully. The best photo to cross stitch converter results come from images with good lighting, defined edges, and fewer than 6–8 major color areas.

Question 6

Can I make a cross stitch pattern from a photograph?

Accepted Answer

Yes — that's exactly what Photo2Stitch does. We turn photographs into counted cross stitch patterns with matched DMC thread codes and a complete bill of materials. No pattern-design experience required.

Question 7

Do you support needlepoint patterns from photos?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Photo2Stitch also works as a photo to needlepoint pattern converter. Choose mono canvas in 12, 14, or 18 mesh and get a pattern with a matched thread list. See our dedicated needlepoint landing page for more detail.

Question 8

What types of photos work best?

Accepted Answer

High-contrast images with clear subjects work best. Portraits, pet photos, and simple landscapes translate beautifully. Avoid photos with lots of small details or busy backgrounds, as these can create confetti-like patterns.

Question 9

What file formats do you accept?

Accepted Answer

We accept JPG, PNG, and WebP files up to 4000x4000 pixels. For best results, use the highest resolution image you have available.

Question 10

Do I need cross-stitch experience?

Accepted Answer

Not at all! Our patterns are designed for all skill levels. The digital canvas lets you zoom in, highlight one color at a time and fix any stitch before you start, and the PDF chart works with Pattern Keeper and Markup R-XP so you can track progress stitch by stitch on your phone.

Question 11

What is included in my order?

Accepted Answer

Your order includes instant access to an interactive digital canvas with your custom pattern, zoom and pan controls for detailed viewing, the ability to edit individual stitches and colors, a complete thread color guide with DMC/Anchor codes, and a downloadable bill of materials.

Question 12

Is thread included?

Accepted Answer

Thread is not included in your order—we can't take away the fun of hunting for supplies! That's part of the experience. We may consider adding a thread kit option in the future. We provide a detailed bill of materials listing all the DMC or Anchor thread colors you need, along with estimated quantities, so you can purchase exactly what you need from your preferred supplier.

Question 13

How do I access my pattern after purchase?

Accepted Answer

After completing checkout, you'll receive an email with a unique access link to your digital canvas. You can access your pattern anytime from any device with an internet connection. Your pattern is stored securely and remains accessible indefinitely.

Question 14

Does the PDF work with Pattern Keeper and Markup R-XP?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every chart we export is a Pattern Keeper compatible cross stitch pattern: the symbols are real text, the grid is vector lines, and the color key lists each thread's number and name, which is exactly what Pattern Keeper (Android) and Markup R-XP (iOS and Android) read. Open the PDF in either app to stitch from your phone with a seamless chart, one-tap color highlighting, and stitch-by-stitch progress tracking. The same PDF also prints cleanly, and a life-size chart is included for stitching straight from paper.

Question 15

Can I remove the background from my photo?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Remove your photo's background free when you sign in. Every pattern you buy adds 2 more removals, and members get unlimited background removal. Turn on Remove background in the editor: photos shot against a plain wall or sheet are cut out instantly, and other photos use a smart cut-out. A refine brush lets you erase or restore anything the automatic cut missed, such as fur or hair. Removing the background means every color goes to your subject, which usually gives a cleaner pattern. Fair use applies: up to 200 background removals a day per account.

Question 16

Do you offer physical printed patterns?

Accepted Answer

Currently, we focus exclusively on digital canvas access to provide you with the most flexible and interactive experience. If we offer physical printed patterns in the future, they will be available as an optional add-on.

Question 17

What is the "Confetti-Improved" pattern?

Accepted Answer

Traditional photo-to-pattern converters often create patterns with lots of isolated single stitches (called "confetti") that are frustrating to complete. Our proprietary algorithm groups colors into clean blocks, making your pattern enjoyable to stitch. While some confetti artifacts may remain, the digital canvas makes it easy for users to refine to get it into a perfect state to match user preferences.

Question 18

Is the preview the real pattern?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The preview is the pattern: what you see is the region map you will edit and stitch, with every color already matched to a real thread. There is no mock-up and no upscaling. The Classic and Clean styles are made with classical image processing; only the Illustrated style uses a machine-learning model to simplify your photo.

Question 19

Can I compare different styles of the same photo?

Accepted Answer

Yes. When you generate a preview we can render the same photo in up to three styles: Classic (faithful to the photo), Clean (smoother areas, fewer single stitches) and Illustrated (a simplified, hand-drawn look). Each card shows its color count, how many single stitches it has and roughly how many skeins it needs. Pick the one you like; only that one becomes your pattern.

Question 20

How many colors should I choose?

Accepted Answer

We recommend 25-35 colors for most photos. Fewer colors (10-20) create a more stylized, graphic look. More colors (40-50) capture finer details but require more thread changes. You can preview different options before ordering.

Question 21

What canvas types are available?

Accepted Answer

For cross-stitch, we offer 7 to 22-count Aida (7- and 8-count are great for kids and beginners) and 25 to 32-count evenweave. For needlepoint, we offer 7 to 18-mesh canvas. The count/mesh number indicates stitches per inch – higher numbers create smaller, more detailed patterns.

Question 22

What is Fabri-Solvy?

Accepted Answer

Fabri-Solvy is a water-soluble stabilizer you can print your chart onto at home. Its sticky backing adheres to your fabric, you stitch through both layers, then dissolve it in warm water when finished, so there is no counting. Our patterns are digital; print the life-size chart from your PDF onto Fabri-Solvy sheets if you prefer this method.

Question 23

Can I save a motif and reuse it in other patterns?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with any unlocked pattern, whether you bought a single pattern, have a membership or used your free pattern credit. On the digital canvas, choose Save as motif next to Export. The design goes into your motif library, trimmed to its stitched area. In another unlocked pattern, open the Layers panel and add a motif from your library or from an .oxs file. You can move it, rotate it, flip it, resize it and stamp it as many times as you like, which is how borders and samplers come together. Each placed motif is a copy, so editing it never changes the original.

Question 24

Can I design a cross stitch pattern from scratch?

Accepted Answer

Yes. In the editor, choose Start a blank canvas, then pick a page size or an exact stitch count, the fabric and the thread brands. The empty canvas unlocks like any pattern, at the same price. From there you draw with the canvas tools, add backstitch and lettering, and place motifs from your library, so you can design your own cross stitch pattern without starting from a photo.

Question 25

What payment methods do you accept?

Accepted Answer

We accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), PayPal, and Apple Pay. All transactions are securely processed through Stripe.

Question 26

Can I use a promo code?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Enter your promo code at checkout. Many of our partners offer exclusive discount codes. Trial codes may provide a free or discounted first order.

Question 27

What is your refund policy?

Accepted Answer

We offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. If you're not happy with your pattern, contact us within 30 days of purchase (choose "Refund request" on the contact form) and tell us briefly what went wrong. Often we can fix the pattern for you; if not, you get a full refund.

Question 28

How do I join the affiliate program?

Accepted Answer

We partner with stitchers, crafting creators, bloggers and newsletter writers with an engaged audience of 1,000 or more. Create a free account and apply from the Affiliate Program page (photo2stitch.com/influencers); a person reviews every application, usually within 2 business days.

Question 29

What do affiliate partners receive?

Accepted Answer

10% commission on every pattern, pack and membership bought with your code or link (12 months on memberships), a code that gives the stitchers you refer 10% off, a free trial code to give away, and a dashboard showing every code use as it happens. Payouts go out on the 1st and 15th once you pass $20.
