Plastic canvas is a rigid mesh that doesn't fray, which is what makes it perfect for coasters, magnets, tissue-box covers, ornaments, and 3D projects — and a favorite first craft for kids. Most projects use 7-count canvas stitched with worsted-weight yarn, which means larger stitches and a smaller grid than fabric cross stitch. A photo that becomes a 140-stitch chart on Aida should usually become a 50–80 stitch chart for plastic canvas, with fewer colors — 10 to 15 works well, because yarn comes in a coarser palette than embroidery floss.
How it works

Good first projects from a photo
Simple, high-contrast subjects convert best at plastic-canvas scale: a pet's face, a house silhouette, a favorite team logo-style crop of a photo, a holiday scene.
